What can you expect in version 2 of Tafl Champions: Ancient Chess?

The bottom line is do what the current version does but better and more. There are three major issues with the game as it stands:

  • Online players cannot reliably compete against each other as players often find themselves on their own
  • There’s no offline mode available
  • There’s no AI to play against
  • There’s not a big enough community to hang out in

There’s also a few features that aren’t present in the current version but were half planned during development such as:

  • multiple variants of tafl style games to play, including rule variations
  • multiple themes to choose and purchase
  • player incentives such as achievements

So how are these issues going to be addressed?

Helping Online Players Find Each Other

Through the use of an events tournament system Tafl Champions will have regular events and tournaments with prizes for everyone to compete in.

Providing an Offline Mode

Even though the game is primarily a PVP game players will still be able to play the game even when offline. Saves will be synchronised when they come back online.

Introducing an AI to Practice with

At least one AI model will be introduced at launch with the intention of providing more and better versions in the future.

Nurturing an Active Community

Starting now more effort will be made in growing the Tafl Champions community to get players chatting amongst each other, set up matches and hopefully make some friends along the way!

We can start by introducing you to the Discord server you haven’t already joined!

Showcasing multiple Tafl variants

The current variant of tafl in Tafl Champions is Tablut, the historically most well documented variant and from the Sámi culture of Lapland. There are many including Tawlbwrdd from Wales, Brandubh from Ireland and Hnefatafl from the Vikings, not to mention modern versions with updated rules.

There are dozens more and you can expect to see them in future versions of Tafl Champions.

Having it your Way

More themes and environments will be available to choose from along with additional shield patterns so you can stand out amongst the crowd.

Tracking your Progress

You’ll be able to track your abilities by engaging in regular activities and challenges to improve your skill level.
